MacBook Wins CNET Reader Awards What Buyers Should Know
Apple wins big in consumer awards. Here's what matters most to laptop buyers and how prices compare.
Apple Dominates Laptop Preferences Among Shoppers
Apple has claimed top honors in a major consumer survey, sweeping eight out of ten categories and earning the overall winner title in CNET’s People’s Picks awards for laptops. The results reveal what matters most to real users and what drives purchasing decisions when choosing between leading laptop brands.
In the survey of over 1,000 US adults conducted between September and October 2026, Apple achieved a remarkable 96.7% overall satisfaction score. More than 74% of MacBook users reported being extremely satisfied with their laptops, while 22.5% expressed satisfaction. This overwhelming approval reflects the combination of features that have made Apple’s notebooks stand out in a competitive market.
What MacBook Owners Value Most

Battery endurance consistently emerges as a defining strength for Apple’s laptop lineup. More than a quarter of surveyed users reported their MacBook battery lasted over 10 hours, while an additional 18.7% achieved 8 to 10 hours of runtime. This 44.4% figure representing eight-plus hours of battery life significantly outpaces competing brands: only 16.4% of Lenovo users, 12.7% of Dell owners, and 11.8% of HP users report similar endurance levels.
The entry-level MacBook Neo delivers approximately 13.5 hours during streaming use, while the MacBook Air 13-inch M5 model reaches approximately 17 hours. For professionals and students who value extended unplugged productivity, these performance metrics make a tangible difference in daily usability.
Display quality represents another area where Apple receives near-universal praise. An exceptional 99.2% of MacBook users expressed satisfaction or extreme satisfaction with their screens’ brightness, color accuracy, and clarity. None reported dissatisfaction. The new MacBook Pro featuring ProLED XDR technology introduces an industry-first OLED touchscreen, delivering enhanced brightness, contrast, and color performance that exceeds previous generations.
Durability and Build Quality Drive Long-Term Value
Premium construction justifies the higher price point for many consumers. Eighty percent of MacBook owners describe their device as having premium build quality, with an additional 18.2% calling it solid. This perception translates into real-world reliability: 87% of users reported zero hardware failures, 8% experienced only minor software fixes, 3% needed minor hardware repairs, and just 2.2% required major repairs such as battery or screen replacement.
Apple’s focus on materials contributes to this durability reputation. The aluminum chassis design and use of 100% recycled aluminum alloy in select models provide structural integrity without excessive weight. The thin, lightweight profiles that define modern MacBooks do not compromise on sturdiness or longevity.
Value perception among owners remains strong despite premium pricing. Forty-four percent of Apple users rated their MacBook as exceptional value, while 50.9% said it was worth the purchase price, yielding a combined positive score of 94.6%. Price points reflect this confidence: 81.8% of MacBook owners paid at least $1,000 for their device, yet the majority expressed satisfaction with that investment.
Performance for Everyday Tasks
The proprietary M-series processors, currently reaching the M6 generation, deliver consistent performance improvements with each release. These chips enhance speed, battery efficiency, AI capabilities, and graphics handling. Nearly 71% of MacBook users reported their device handles workloads without lag or performance issues, with no respondents rating performance as poor.
The integration of macOS 27 Golden Gate provides built-in AI features like Siri AI and Visual Intelligence. Safari enhancements allow organizing tabs by topic, while the Notify Me feature alerts users to website changes such as price reductions or breaking news. Task automation through shortcuts further streamlines daily work processes. For those invested in Apple’s ecosystem, portable chargers designed for MacBooks complement the excellent native battery performance for extended travel.
Brand Loyalty Reflects User Satisfaction

The survey uncovered strong brand retention among Apple customers. Sixty-eight percent said they would repurchase the same MacBook model, while 29.1% indicated they would choose a different model within Apple’s lineup. Only 3% expressed intent to switch to non-Apple brands. This loyalty stems partly from seamless integration within the Apple ecosystem: Continuity features enable starting tasks on one device and completing them on another, while iCloud, Universal Clipboard, and AirDrop enhance workflow across devices.
Considering Other Premium Brands
Although Apple leads decisively, other brands merit consideration depending on budget and specific needs. Asus earns recognition as a strong non-Apple alternative, with 47.5% of owners rating their devices as exceptional value. Models like the Asus Zenbook A14 combine thin and lightweight design with strong battery life and OLED display technology at $1,200. Acer appeals to budget-conscious buyers, with 38% of users paying under $500. The Acer Aspire 16 AI offers a 16-inch screen, lightweight construction at 3.5 pounds, and over 21 hours of battery endurance for approximately $700.
Lenovo emphasizes versatility through its Yoga 2-in-1 line and durable ThinkPad business models. For those prioritizing build quality and repairability, accessories like external docking stations extend laptop functionality regardless of brand choice.
When shopping for a new laptop, these survey results provide concrete data about what users value most: reliable battery performance, outstanding display quality, durable construction, and consistent performance. MacBooks deliver across all categories, but alternative brands offer compelling options at various price points for buyers with different priorities and budgets.
