7 Essential Emergency Features You Should Enable on Your Google Pixel Phone
Set up these safety tools now to protect yourself and help first responders during a crisis.
Your smartphone can be your lifeline during a crisis, but only if you set up its emergency features before you actually need them. Google Pixel phones come equipped with powerful safety tools that can alert emergency services, share your location, and provide critical health information to first responders. The key is taking time now to configure these features so they work automatically when it matters most.
1. Activate Safety Check for Solo Activities
Safety Check is designed for moments when you’re doing something that carries some risk, whether that’s running alone at night, attending an unfamiliar event, or using a rideshare service. This feature prompts you to confirm you’re safe at intervals you set, and if you don’t respond, it notifies your emergency contacts with your location.
To set it up, open Personal Safety, navigate to Safety Check, select your activity type and duration, then choose which contacts should be notified. Your contacts will receive a text with your name and check-in details. When the prompt appears, you can confirm you’re okay, decline to share your location, or call 911 directly.
2. Store Medical Information and Emergency Contacts

First responders need quick access to vital health data in an emergency. Within the Personal Safety app, add your allergies, medications, blood type, and any chronic conditions under Your info. Then add emergency contacts that first responders can reach. Most importantly, enable Emergency info access and select Show when locked. This makes your medical details visible from your lock screen without requiring a passcode, letting anyone assisting you understand your health status immediately.
Your emergency contacts can also be configured to receive your location automatically if you enable Emergency Sharing within the Personal Safety app. This ensures the people you trust know where you are if something happens.
3. Configure Emergency SOS Settings
Emergency SOS is a comprehensive system that bundles several critical functions into one feature. You can program it to call emergency services, share your location with chosen contacts, and even record video evidence of your situation. Access this in Settings under Safety & emergency, then Emergency SOS, and complete the setup wizard.
You’ll specify your local emergency number, decide whether to use assisted calling for those with hearing or speech difficulties, select contacts to inform, and toggle emergency video recording. You can also choose how to activate it: either by holding the power button and touching the screen, or by having it trigger automatically after five rapid power button presses.
4. Enable All Available Emergency Alerts
Android devices can push several types of emergency notifications directly to your phone. Wireless emergency alerts notify you of severe weather and natural disasters in your area, plus AMBER alerts for missing children. You can customize these under Settings in the Notifications section. Crisis alerts, which provide localized information and search results about emergencies, are enabled by default but can be adjusted in Safety & emergency settings.
If you live in California, Oregon, or Washington, enable earthquake alerts under Safety & emergency. These can provide critical seconds of warning before seismic activity affects your area.
5. Turn On Car Crash Detection
Modern Pixel devices use motion sensors, location data, and sound analysis to detect severe vehicle collisions. When a crash is detected, your phone prompts you to confirm whether you need help, and automatically calls emergency services if you don’t respond within a set timeframe.
To enable this, open Personal Safety, go to Features, select Car Crash Detection, and complete the setup. You’ll need to grant permissions for location access while using the app and allow microphone and motion sensor access at all times. Keep in mind this feature isn’t available in every country.
6. Add a Lock Screen Emergency Message

Beyond medical information, you can add a custom message visible on your lock screen. This is perfect for including a secondary contact person or displaying critical health alerts that someone finding your phone should see immediately. This message appears without unlocking your device, making it instantly visible to anyone who might assist you.
7. Use Satellite SOS When Disconnected
If you own a Pixel 9 or later model (except the Pixel 9a), you can connect to emergency services via satellite even when you have no cellular signal or wifi. This feature works with Google Messages as your default messaging app. When attempting to call 911 without service, a Satellite SOS option appears on your screen. Select it, answer prompts about your situation, notify your emergency contacts, and establish a text conversation with dispatchers through the satellite connection.
Setting up these emergency features takes only a few minutes but could save your life or help first responders assist you more effectively during a crisis. The best smartwatches for swimming also offer their own emergency features worth exploring if you wear one regularly. Don’t wait until an emergency occurs to discover these tools exist. Configure them today and have peace of mind knowing your phone is ready to protect you when you need it most.
