This development comes as Ring seeks to rebuild trust with users who have questioned what happens to their video data and how much access law enforcement can gain.
The TAKE encryption system represents Ring’s response to mounting scrutiny over its data practices. Previously, the company faced multiple controversies, including a 2019 incident where employees worldwide could reportedly access customer videos, and a 2023 settlement with the FTC over privacy failures that involved unauthorized video access by a former employee and security breaches affecting thousands of accounts. With TAKE rolling out globally as the default setting, Ring is attempting to address these concerns at a technical level.
How TAKE Encryption Works

The new system operates by encrypting all video footage with keys that rotate automatically every five minutes. On newer Ring camera models, this encryption happens directly on the device itself. For older models, the rotation and encryption occur once the footage reaches Ring’s cloud servers. This approach means that each piece of video data is protected by a unique key that constantly changes.
Ring can temporarily access these encryption keys through an isolated AWS Nitro Enclave, a secure computing environment, to power cloud-based features that shoppers rely on daily. These features include Smart Alerts, which notify users of detected motion or people, Video Search functionality, and automated Video Descriptions. However, Ring’s access is strictly temporary. After 24 hours, the company’s copies of the encryption keys are irreversibly deleted. The original encryption keys remain with your devices at all times, ensuring you maintain ultimate control over your footage.
If you need to process older footage, you can manually request it through the Ring app, which then provides the required key to the company for processing. Once the processing is complete, that key is deleted as well. Ring built TAKE using Messaging Layer Security, an open group-encryption standard maintained by the Internet Engineering Task Force, which means the underlying technology is transparent and subject to independent review.
Law Enforcement Access and Your Rights

You can recover your encryption keys by standing near a compatible Ring camera, using a passphrase you set up, restoring from a cloud backup, getting approval from another enrolled device, or using a passkey. These multiple recovery paths ensure you do not lose access to your own footage.
